D7 Passive Income Visa
The Portugal D7 Visa, also known as the Passive Income Visa or Retirement Visa, allows non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens with stable passive income to obtain residency in Portugal. Unlike the D8, which is designed for remote workers with active income, the D7 is built for retirees, investors and property owners living off pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties or interest. Our immigration team confirms your eligibility, secures the Portuguese documents you need, and books your appointments end to end.
- For pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties and interest
- Lower income threshold than the D8
- Two-year residence permit, renewable for three-year periods
- A dedicated immigration consultant throughout
Income and savings requirements
The D7 minimum income is tied to the Portuguese minimum wage. As of 2026 the minimum wage is EUR 920, so the thresholds are:
| Applicant profile | Monthly income | Annual equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Main applicant | EUR 920 | EUR 11,040 |
| + Spouse or additional adult (+50%) | EUR 1,380 | EUR 16,560 |
| + Spouse + 1 child (+30% / child) | EUR 1,656 | EUR 19,872 |
Savings requirement
Liquid savings of roughly twelve months of the required income — about EUR 11,040 for a single applicant in 2026 — increasing for each family member.
- Only passive income qualifies: pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties or interest.
- Active income such as salary or freelance fees does not qualify on its own — consider the D8 instead.
- Income should ideally show 3 to 12 months of consistent history.

The details that matter.
Accommodation first
Unlike some categories, the D7 requires proof of accommodation in Portugal before you submit — a long-term rental of twelve months or more, or a property purchase agreement. We arrange this for you.
Tax considerations
Tax residency follows physical presence, not the visa. Spending more than 183 days a year in Portugal makes you a tax resident on worldwide income, at rates from 14% to 48%.
2026 citizenship update
From 19 May 2026 the naturalization wait is seven years for EU and Portuguese-speaking nationals and ten years for others, with a language and civic exam. It is not retroactive and does not affect D7 residency rights.
D7 or D8 — which fits your situation?
The D7 is for genuinely passive income. If your income comes from active work — a remote job, freelance contracts or a business you run — the D8 is the correct route, though it requires a higher monthly income (EUR 3,680 in 2026).
